My Dilemma

Man.
I am not very good at math.

I knew that.  Before I got into quilting, I knew that I had to measure and do math and such.

However, I am not very good at it.

So....let's be honest. I avoid it.

So, when I put my quilt backing fabric up to my finished top and....DOH! It is about 3 inches lacking in width. With the selvages still on!

So....now I am problem-solving. How do I fix this?

So....I have cut my charms in half...and I am sewing them together lengthwise. Then, I think I am going to cut off the selvages and sew on this 2.5 inch strip to either side of the quilt to add width. I have no idea how this is going to look or work in the end...but Hey.

Gotta give it a try!

  1. 1. Remove the selvedge, it will distort your FMQ IF you leave it on.

    2. Add at least 6 inches on each side of the quilt back it needs to be bigger than your quilt by 4 inches on each side of the quilt. You can add 12 inches to just one side. The important thing is the backing is ALWAYS BIGGER THAN THE FRONT.

    3. I often sew my pieced backs with 1/2 inch seams and press the seams open. My long armer says that that makes a better backing easier to needle.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Yep, do what Nonnie said.. I always end up piecing together large chunks of fabric for my backs. I never have a piece big enough, unless I'm making little mini quilts or sometimes baby quilts.
