Addiction....to fabric shopping

So....I am supposed to be working. However, one of the downsides of working online at home is that the temptation to fabric shop is overwhelming! I am browsing Amazon for quilting books. Slipping over to online fabric stores to check out the latest fabrics...sigh.

And I found a stencil for free-motion quilting on Amazon.


I am going to venture into the world of free-motion quilting.

How do the mylar stencils work? Are they any good?

Up until now I have been happy with my walking foot and a straight lines.....so....gulp. I can do this!

    I think they are good for beginners or if you want to do a specific pattern ..... Many people use the blue disappearing markers or ceramic pencils ( SEW LINE ) to mark the lines then FMQ over them.

    I have been going thru LEAH DAY's FMQ on line videos and learning different patterns. I had purchased her DVDs showing how to get started ... I also used Patsy Thompson' s DVDs I get them at Joann Fabrics with coupons for $10-15. ( fast and free .... start with 0.5 the beginner dvd) A lot of pdC are taking the BEYOND BASIC MACHINE QUILTING class on Craftsy.

    I think the most important part of FMQ is the set up of the machine. The machine should be embedded in a flat surface .. A table or an extension of some type so you can move your hands around. YOU do not have to have a huge area but about 12 inches around the needle is the minimum. It gives you the ability to move .... YOur quilt does need to be supported around you so it does not pull off the surface.

    BE READY TO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... and more practice.

    I have been talking about FMQ on my blog ... I have been making baby quilt panels into quilts and have been talking about the adventure. I have only been FMQ a couple of months. .... I am loving it.... just another creative endeavor.

    I am also following the MODERN QUILTING MOVEMENT... many of the ladies that blog use domestic machines... but some are long armers.... I do like their styles and attitude.... I CAN DO IT.

    I would not recommend using a stencil for meandering, however they do come in handy for other designs. For meandering, you simply need to relax and get loopy :-)
